So Far, So Good...

The Freak Factory opened in the summer of 1999 with a focus on original art, vintage brands and mid-century memorabilia. From the beginning, tiki mugs like Orchids of Hawaii replicas, Tiki Farm, Chikitiki, local Bosko ceramics and a little zine called Tiki News were kept behind the counter, favorites of residents and tourists alike.

Our tropical lifestyle merchandise grew to include aloha shirts from Reyn Spooner, Kahala, Go Barefoot, Kamehameha and Pacific Legend. Surf wax, board shorts, tees and accessories by 1970's legendary surf company Hawaiian Island Creations shared an eclectic boutique with Lava Lamps, vintage Rock & Reggae gear and a humidor filled with premium Cuban seed cigars.

After a catastrophic fire in 2006, Hank Adelson, owner and lifelong artist, directed a major remodel bringing Freaky Boutiki to life anew with fire-lit Polynesian A-Frames, secret Pirate Coves, Caribbean Shanties and, with the epic Grateful Gargantua, a mammoth wooden Tiki frieze that graces our shop's exterior, gave Mission Beach one of its most striking and popular photo destinations.
